Do subjects like mathematics and economics feel dry and boring to you? If yes, then you are not alone.

Does it have to be this way? No!

My name is Dhairya Nagpal. I recently finished my MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). My education in economics has given me a unique and immense level of understanding of these two subjects. Now, I want to impart this knowledge to students who are facing the same challenges I faced and overcame.

Studying these subjects at GCSE and A-Levels can be daunting, but they can be equally rewarding and fun if they are taught in the right way. I fully believe that every student has what it takes to excel in any subject. But for anyone to be able to do that, they need to have a committed teacher who understands exactly what the student needs to be their best self. And as a tutor, I have one objective: while making my student fall in love with the subject, I also prepare them to face those subjects in exam settings.

I have a lot of experience in teaching various subjects in both formal and informal settings.

As one of the top performing students in my cohort during my undergraduate studies, I was a tutor to a lot of my classmates. At that time, I was teaching them subjects such as mathematics, statistics, econometrics, microeconomics and macroeconomics. As some of my classmates were at different stages and had different skills and needs, I learned how to tailor my lessons to ensure that each student gets a unique experience.

This experience made me realise how passionate I am about teaching. This led me to join Purple Ruler as a maths tutor. At Purple Ruler, I was teaching mathematics at GCSE level to students in the UK who felt left behind due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There, I was able to significantly improve my student’s understanding of various topics and prepare them for exams.

Teaching at both the school and university levels have equipped me with a certain set of skills. Because of the wide diversity of students that I have taught, I have learned a lot about how to ensure that each student gets the attention they require and maximise their learning.

When I used to tutor my classmates, the one thing that I learned was that subjects such as mathematics and economics are not taught correctly to students in their school. Instructors teach these subjects at a very abstract level. This makes students dislike such subjects and makes them feel that a lot of mathematics topics do not serve any purpose in real-life. This made me want to teach students at a school level, so that I can help them in nurturing a passion for such subjects from the starting.

Keeping this in mind, I always try to make even seemingly boring subjects very interesting by talking about how a lot of topics are used in real-life. I use examples from different fields where mathematical topics are applied in real-life. This not only gives students an understanding of why they are studying certain topics, it also makes these topics more interesting.

Other than this I also try to enhance learning by regularly taking small quizzes and tests. Studies suggests that learning in the form of questions and answers is the most effective way of retaining and recalling subject matter.

I believe that this teaching method will ensure that a student not only enjoys what they are studying but also learn to the best of their ability.
