Hello! I am a second-year mathematics student at Queen Mary. I left my country Iran and came to the UK when I was 16. Studying in another language and a different educational system had its own challenges but I learned and grew from it.

Deep interest in mathematics made me curious to go beyond so I started studying for the mathematics olympiad at 15 and that is how after a year I ended up immigrating.

This background led to improvent of my problem-solving skills and helped me understand different ways of thinking better which is a very helpful skill in teaching a concept to someone.

The challenges I encountered as an international student, now help me understand students’ difficulties better and taught me that explaining and understanding a concept is beyond language.

Becoming responsible in the last year of primary school, for our maths was my first tutoring experience. I realised how enjoyable it is to explain a concept to someone and help them with the parts that are challenging for them. Two years later I again became responsible to help my peers for 2 years and that was when I started understanding my teaching methods, strengths, and weaknesses.

In my first year at university, my friend's child who was in year nine and had not fully participated in her classes, hence when we met I asked her about the concepts and the questions that she was not confident about and explained them to her. These meetings helped me develop my confidence to teach in English and to learn more about about different learning styles.

I then became a ReachOUT mentor in my first year of university and that was a great experience for me to develop my communication skills and connect with students to help them develop both personality-wise and academically.

I am now a PASS Mentor where I help year 1 maths students from our university with the questions they may have about different modules.

These experiences made me realise that each person has their own unique learning style. Getting to know the student and figuring out the best plan and teaching style for that person is my teaching method.

I have a very patient, empathetic, and persistent nature when teaching hence any questions, criticisms, and requests to change are more than welcome anytime! My aim is to provide an engaging environment and fulfill the needs of the tutees and their parents.

In addition to that, I believe that mathematics is a subject to understand and not just to memories. Therefore, considering the situation, my effort will be towards an explanation of the reasoning and logic of things and problem-solving techniques.

I am a goal-oriented person hence if I realise a student wants the sessions for a specific exam or objective, I am more than happy to structure those sessions as focused preparation for that goal.
