¡Hola! My name is Maya, and I am currently studying Sociology with Spanish at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

I know what it is like to not always be top of the class but I also know what it takes to change that around. How hard work, organisation, determination, self-discipline, and ownership of your learning can translate into tangible success. I’m a real-life example of someone who moved from having a relatively blasé approach to their education to one who is now striving for excellence and attaining grades and receiving opportunities that I am very proud of.  Hence, in Sociology and Spanish, I achieved A*-A respectively, at both GCSE and A-level.

 I am very passionate about both these subjects; Spanish because I am excited by the opportunities a second language may offer me once I complete my education and Sociology, because of the way it has allowed me to see the world in a more sophisticated way. It is with this enthusiasm I hope to engage others helping them to develop an appetite for learning.  It does not always come naturally as my own experience demonstrates.

I have had previous experience tutoring both Sociology and Spanish.

In Sixth Form, I was nominated to tutor GCSE Sociology students who were preparing for their exams. I was responsible for planning and conducting weekly revision sessions. I developed key skills such as time management, good communication skills, patience, and adaptability, as they had varying degrees of understanding. It was often necessary for me to come up with alternative ways of explaining a concept so that students who initially did not understand would have the opportunity to grasp it and feel more confident in their learning.

I also supported a young student, practicing and gaining confidence with her Spanish GCSE course. I made learning a language less about relying on textbooks and instead, widened her opportunities to listen, read and write in Spanish. For example, watching short films and cartoons, doing quizzes, and reading the Spanish version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I plan to continue using these techniques when supporting young people in the future.

With my own learning, I organised and developed my own revision resources by creating Google slides.  My teacher was extremely impressed and asked that I share them with my fellow classmates who were extremely grateful

I understand each student may have different preferences around how they learn and retain information and would work to help my students recognise what works for them and/or help introduce strategies that they may find useful. It is never one size fits all. Given this, my aim is to adopt a teaching style that reflects how they learn best, whether this is visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic. Also, I know the value of feedback and would encourage a two-way dialogue between me and any tutees so I too can learn how best to deliver content to them.  Despite being a student myself who can find it hard to receive constructive criticism, I understand its transformative impact on personal and academic growth.

Finally, what will be consistent for each student I teach are qualities that I found most helpful and inspiring in my own favourite teachers over the years.  I call them the 3 P’s;

  • Patience
  • Passion
  • Personality

I firmly believe these three characteristics will help make each lesson feel fun, and above all help to create a rapport between myself and the tutees.

I look forward to meeting you!
